Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass to the UNESCO kasbah and Morocco's Hollywood

Cross the High Atlas in a single day to discover Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous kasbah in Morocco. This spectacular fortified village of earthen houses, rising up a hillside above the Ounila river, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most filmed places in the country — from Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator to Game of Thrones. The adventure begins early with pick-up from your hotel or riad. The road climbs through the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres the highest road pass in Morocco, with hairpin bends, Berber villages clinging to the slopes and breathtaking panoramas. You'll stop at viewpoints along the way and at a women's argan oil cooperative. On the southern side of the mountains, the landscape changes dramatically to the red and ochre colours of the pre-Sahara. At Ait Ben Haddou, a local guide takes you through the ksar's narrow lanes, past ancient granaries and family homes, up to the top of the hill for a sweeping view over the valley and the desert beyond. After lunch (at your own expense) with a view of the kasbah, you continue to Ouarzazate, known as the "Hollywood of Africa", for a panoramic stop at the Taourirt Kasbah and the film studios area, before heading back over the mountains to arrive in Marrakech in the evening.

    07:30: Pick-up from your hotel or riad and drive over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with photo stops and an argan cooperative visit. Late morning: Guided visit of Ait Ben Haddou. Midday: Lunch with a view of the kasbah (own expense). Afternoon: Drive to Ouarzazate for a panoramic stop at the Taourirt Kasbah and the film studios area. Return over the mountains to Marrakech, arriving around 19:30–20:00.
