Panoramica

Cross Morocco from Marrakech to Fes via the Atlas, the kasbahs and the Sahara dunes

Why go back the way you came? This three-day journey connects Marrakech and Fes, Morocco's two great imperial cities, by way of the Sahara — the perfect route if you're travelling across the country and want to see mountains, kasbahs, oases and desert along the way. You leave Marrakech over the High Atlas via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) and stop at Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village made famous by films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. The road then leads past Ouarzazate and through the Valley of Roses to the Dades Valley, lined with earthen kasbahs, where you spend the first night. On day two, you explore the Todra Gorge, where sheer rock walls rise 300 metres above the river, before heading through palm oases to Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. At sunset, you typically ride into the dunes by camel to reach a desert camp, where dinner is served under a sky blazing with stars. After sunrise over the Sahara, day three takes you north through the Ziz Valley, with its long ribbon of palm groves, and over the Middle Atlas via Midelt. You'll pass the cedar forests around Azrou, home to Barbary macaques, and the alpine-style town of Ifrane, known as "Morocco's Switzerland", before arriving in Fes in the evening. The camp standard, accommodation and exact programme are confirmed by Morocco Next with your booking.
