Trade the red city for the white-and-blue charm of Essaouira, Morocco's most relaxed seaside town. Once known as Mogador, this 18th-century fortified port on the Atlantic coast was a major trading hub between Africa and Europe — and today its car-free medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, is one of the most pleasant in the country to explore on foot. The day begins with pick-up in Marrakech and a scenic drive west (about 3 hours each way) across the plains. As you approach the coast, the landscape fills with argan trees — and if you're lucky, you may spot the famous goats climbing in their branches. There's usually a stop at an argan cooperative, where local women show how the precious oil is produced by hand. In Essaouira, you'll have free time to explore at your own pace. Walk along the Skala de la Ville, the sea ramparts lined with old bronze cannons and crashing waves, and wander through the medina's whitewashed lanes, art galleries and thuya-wood workshops. Down at the busy fishing port, rows of blue boats unload the day's catch, and seagulls circle overhead — the perfect spot for a lunch of freshly grilled fish. The long sandy beach, famous for its steady winds, is a favourite with kitesurfers. In the late afternoon, you head back to Marrakech, arriving in the evening. Choose a shared small-group departure or a private vehicle for up to four people.
