Atlas passes, Ait Ben Haddou, Todra Gorge and a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes

This is Morocco's most popular desert adventure: in just three days, you travel from Marrakech over the High Atlas Mountains and through the valley of a thousand kasbahs to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, where you spend a night under the Sahara's stars. Day one takes you over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), the highest road pass in Morocco, with sweeping views of Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides. On the southern side, you stop at Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen village listed by UNESCO and a famous filming location for movies such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. You continue past Ouarzazate, the "gateway to the desert", and through the Valley of Roses to the dramatic Dades Valley for the night. On day two, you walk between the towering 300-metre-high walls of the Todra Gorge before driving on through palm oases and desert plains to Merzouga. As the sun begins to set, the dunes of Erg Chebbi glow orange and red — rising up to 150 metres high, they are the most spectacular in Morocco. Here, you typically mount a camel and ride into the dunes to a desert camp, where dinner is served under a sky full of stars, often with Berber drumming around the campfire. Wake early to climb a dune and watch the sunrise over the Sahara, then begin the scenic journey back to Marrakech through the Draa and southern valleys, arriving in the evening.     Drive through the Dades area and stop at the Todra Gorge to walk between its towering cliffs. Continue through palm oases and desert plains to Merzouga. In the late afternoon, ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes (usually by camel) to watch the sunset and reach your desert camp. Dinner and night under the stars.

    Early wake-up to watch the sunrise over the dunes, then return to Merzouga for breakfast. Long scenic drive back via the southern valleys and Ouarzazate, crossing the High Atlas once more to arrive in Marrakech in the evening.
