Overview

Middle Atlas cedars, the Erg Chebbi dunes, Todra Gorge and Ait Ben Haddou

Start in Fes and finish in Marrakech, crossing the whole of Morocco through some of its most varied landscapes: cedar forests and alpine towns, palm-filled valleys, the golden dunes of the Sahara and the earthen kasbahs of the south. Four days gives you time to enjoy the desert without rushing. The journey begins with a drive into the Middle Atlas, passing Ifrane — the tidy, alpine-style town known as "Morocco's Switzerland" — and the great cedar forests around Azrou, where Barbary macaques live in the trees. Over the mountains via Midelt, the landscape turns dramatically to desert as you descend through the Ziz Valley, a long green ribbon of palm groves, towards Merzouga. The next day is all about the Sahara. In the late afternoon, you typically ride by camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes — the highest in Morocco, up to 150 metres tall — to watch the sunset and spend the night in a desert camp, with dinner under the stars and often Berber drumming by the fire. After sunrise in the dunes, you head west to walk through the towering Todra Gorge and continue to the Dades Valley, "the valley of a thousand kasbahs". On the final day, you pass Ouarzazate and visit the UNESCO-listed fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech. The camp standard, accommodation and exact programme are confirmed by Morocco Next with your booking.
